Bookno Terms of Service
Effective date: September 8, 2026
Last updated: September 8, 2026
Applicable versions: Bookno 1.0 and later versions that expressly reference these terms
Welcome to Bookno.
These terms are entered into between you and the developer of this app (referred to as “we”). They govern your access to and use of the Bookno app and its features, content, and services (collectively, the “Service”). Please read these terms and the Bookno Privacy Policy carefully before use. By downloading, installing, accessing, or using the Service, you confirm that you have read and agree to these terms; if you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Description of the Service
Bookno is a local-first tool for managing personal reading materials and notes. Current main features include:
- Creating, editing, organizing, searching, and deleting books, notes, and tags;
- Importing reading notes from Apple Books clipboard text, Kindle TXT/PDF, BOOX TXT/PDF/images, the WeRead API, and other currently supported text sources;
- Photographing physical book pages with the device camera or the system photo picker; text recognition is performed on device by default using Apple’s built-in OCR capability, or, after you actively configure and consent, by the AI OCR service you designate (see Section 7);
- Exporting readable, portable Markdown files, or exporting and restoring full Bookno JSON backups;
- Syncing data across devices via Apple iCloud/CloudKit after purchasing Bookno PRO (one-time purchase);
- Other reading-management features provided with version updates.
The free version limits the number of books (up to 10) and notes (up to 1,000); adding, importing, or restoring content beyond these limits will be declined. A one-time Bookno PRO purchase unlocks unlimited capacity, iCloud sync, and other benefits; the scope of benefits and pricing are as shown on the App Store purchase page.
Internet book search, barcode scanning, and general AI features (such as automatic tagging, summaries, or Q&A) are not currently available features. Technical placeholders in the interface, code, or documentation do not mean those features are provided now or guaranteed in the future. Apart from the Bookno PRO one-time purchase and the optional AI OCR service expressly described in these terms, the app contains no other subscriptions or paid features.
Some features depend on compatible devices, operating system versions, network access, Apple ID, iCloud storage, third-party services, or corresponding permissions, and may not be available in every country, region, language, or device.
2. Relationship with Apple’s terms
Apps obtained through the App Store are licensed, not sold. If we do not provide a custom end-user license agreement in App Store Connect, your license to Bookno is also subject to Apple’s standard End User License Agreement (EULA) and the App Store usage rules.
These terms supplement the specific service rules of Bookno and do not exclude or limit Apple’s standard EULA, the App Store terms, applicable law, or consumer rights you cannot waive by law. In case of conflict, the provisions with legally superior force prevail.
You acknowledge and agree that:
- These terms are between you and us; Apple is not a party to them;
- To the extent permitted by law, we, not Apple, are responsible for the maintenance, support, and product liability of Bookno and for lawful claims related to the app;
- Apple owes no warranty obligations for the app beyond its standard EULA or applicable law;
- If a third party claims that the app or your use infringes their intellectual property, we will handle the matters the app provider is responsible for under applicable law and Apple’s rules;
- Your use of the App Store, iCloud, Apple ID, and other Apple services is also governed by Apple’s relevant terms;
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of the Apple-related provisions in these terms and may enforce them.
3. License to use
Subject to your compliance with these terms, Apple’s usage rules, and applicable law, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable license to install and use Bookno on Apple-branded devices you own or control, for personal, non-commercial purposes.
Except as expressly permitted by applicable law, you may not:
- Copy, rent, lend, sell, resell, distribute, sublicense, or publicly provide the app;
- Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, crack, circumvent technical protections, or attempt to obtain source code;
- Modify the app or create derivative products based on it;
- Interfere with the normal operation of the app, iCloud, the WeRead API, or other systems and networks;
- Use automated means to abuse APIs, bypass access restrictions, or scrape data without authorization;
- Remove or alter copyright, trademark, or other rights notices in the app.
Open-source components with separate licenses are governed by those licenses.
4. User content and intellectual property
4.1 Your content
You retain the rights to book information, notes, tags, images, and other content you create and lawfully own. You authorize the app to copy, transform, and store this content solely to provide the local processing, import, export, backup, and iCloud sync features you actively use.
We do not acquire ownership of your content through your use of Bookno, nor do we use your private reading content to train advertising profiles or display it to other users.
4.2 Your responsibility
You should ensure you have the right to create, copy, import, store, transform, and export the relevant content. You may not use the app to:
- Infringe others’ copyright, trademark, privacy rights, trade secrets, or other lawful rights;
- Mass-copy, redistribute, or commercially exploit unauthorized book texts, note files, or images;
- Store or distribute illegal, harmful, fraudulent, infringing, or malicious content;
- Circumvent digital rights management, access controls, or third-party service restrictions;
- Act in violation of your agreements with Apple, WeRead, Amazon/Kindle, BOOX, or other providers.
Bookno is a personal organization tool and does not mean you have obtained permission to reproduce or distribute third-party content.
4.3 Our rights
The app’s software, interface, brand, icons, documentation, and original content provided by us are protected by intellectual property law. Except for the limited license granted in these terms, all rights are reserved by us or the respective rights holders.
5. Import, OCR, and data accuracy
Import and OCR results may contain omissions, errors, wrong ordering, duplicates, or matching mistakes due to file formats, layout, image clarity, language, device capability, or third-party API changes. On-device OCR mainly targets Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and English, and actual results depend on the system’s recognition capability. If you enable AI OCR, recognition is performed by the third-party service you configure, which may introduce additional errors and may incur fees or usage limits charged by that provider; review the provider’s rules before enabling. Verify results yourself before saving, quoting, publishing, or relying on them.
The app may apply deduplication, book-matching, and tag-merging logic, but automatic decisions are not guaranteed to be correct. Full JSON backup restoration first validates the file and, after your confirmation, replaces the books, notes, tags, sources, covers, OCR scan pages, and import records in the current Bookno database; restored content remains subject to the free version’s quantity limits. Markdown is for reading and migration only and is not a full restore file for the current version. Export an independent backup before performing a restore or other bulk operations.
6. iCloud sync
iCloud sync is an optional feature included with Bookno PRO (one-time purchase). After purchasing Bookno PRO and enabling it, Bookno uses Apple CloudKit to store supported data in the private database associated with your Apple ID and sync it across devices.
You understand and agree that:
- Syncing depends on your Apple ID, the iCloud service, network connectivity, available storage, and Apple’s system behavior;
- Data sync may experience delays, conflicts, duplicates, temporary unavailability, or failure due to system constraints;
- When the same content is edited on multiple devices at the same time, the system may automatically merge or overwrite with the newer version;
- After enabling or disabling sync, Bookno must be closed and reopened for the actual storage mode to switch; if the iCloud container fails to start, the app continues using the local data copy;
- Disabling sync only stops this device from syncing; it does not automatically delete data already in iCloud;
- Credentials such as the WeRead API key and AI OCR API key are not synced to iCloud as Bookno reading data;
- You should keep independent backups of important data and should not treat iCloud sync as your only backup.
Apple’s own terms and privacy policy govern the provision, availability, and data processing of iCloud and CloudKit.
7. Third-party services and external links
The app may let you open or connect to Apple Books, WeRead, or the App Store, import content generated by Kindle, BOOX, or other third-party services, or — after you actively configure and consent — send book page images preprocessed on device to the AI OCR service you designate (preset to Alibaba Cloud Bailian’s Qwen OCR, or another OpenAI-compatible service you enter). Third-party services are independently provided by the respective third parties; their availability, content, APIs, security, and data handling are beyond our control. AI OCR may incur fees or usage limits under the provider’s rules.
When using third-party services, you must comply with their terms, privacy policies, content licenses, and regional restrictions. Third parties may change, limit, or discontinue their APIs at any time, causing Bookno’s related connections, cover downloads, or import features to become temporarily or permanently unavailable.
Unless expressly stated in writing, there is no agency, partnership, certification, or official endorsement between Bookno and Apple Books, WeRead, Tencent, Kindle, Amazon, or BOOX. For problems with third-party services, contact the respective provider first; if the issue involves Bookno itself, contact us under Section 15.
8. Bookno PRO (one-time purchase)
Bookno’s current core features are free to use. The free version limits books (up to 10) and notes (up to 1,000); beyond the limits, adding, importing, or restoring may be declined until you delete some existing content or upgrade your entitlement.
You can purchase Bookno PRO via an in-app purchase — a one-time purchase that unlocks unlimited capacity, iCloud sync, and other benefits. Details:
- The actual product name, price, and scope of benefits are as shown on the App Store purchase page; verify carefully before buying;
- Purchase and payment are handled by Apple through the App Store; we never obtain your card number or other payment credentials;
- PRO is a non-consumable purchase tied to your App Store account; after changing devices you can restore it via “Restore Purchases” in the app, and the account’s Family Sharing rules typically apply;
- Purchases, refunds, taxes, Family Sharing, and regional availability follow Apple’s rules; if a purchase is refunded or reversed, the related benefits may be revoked;
- PRO entitlement status is verified on device by Apple’s StoreKit, without connecting to our servers; verification failure or unavailability does not change your existing local data;
- We may adjust PRO benefits or introduce new paid models in the future, updating the purchase page, privacy disclosure, and these terms accordingly.
This section does not promise the scope of benefits, pricing, or availability timelines.
9. Privacy and data protection
We process data related to the Service in accordance with the Bookno Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. Please read the relevant explanations before using the camera, photo library, files, clipboard, WeRead connection, AI OCR, or iCloud sync features.
You should properly protect your device, Apple ID, WeRead API key, and AI OCR API key. Risks arising from your voluntary sharing of keys, device theft, weak passwords, jailbreaking, malware, or third-party account compromises are borne by the responsible party under applicable law.
10. Service changes, updates, and interruptions
We may add, modify, suspend, or discontinue features to improve the experience, security, compatibility, legal compliance, or business arrangements. Significant changes will be communicated through in-app notices, release notes, or public pages where circumstances permit.
When operating systems, devices, third-party APIs, or Apple review rules change, some features may require updates to keep working. You are responsible for installing security and compatibility updates promptly. We do not guarantee permanent support for all old versions, old devices, or third-party formats.
11. Prohibited conduct
When using the Service, you may not:
- Violate applicable law, court orders, or regulatory requirements;
- Infringe the lawful rights of any person or organization;
- Distribute malicious code, or attack, probe, or interfere with the app and related services;
- Impersonate others, or use someone else’s API key, account, or data without authorization;
- Use the app for unlawful surveillance, harassment, fraud, or other improper purposes;
- Use the Service in a way that could create legal liability for us, Apple, or third parties.
12. Termination
You may stop using and uninstall the app at any time. Before uninstalling, we recommend exporting important data, completing any necessary deletions on devices with sync enabled, disconnecting WeRead, and deleting the API key in the AI OCR configuration (if configured). Uninstalling usually removes local data in the app container, but not necessarily the WeRead or AI OCR API keys stored in the system keychain, nor data already stored in the iCloud private database.
If you materially breach these terms, infringe third-party rights, endanger service security, or the law requires us to act, we may restrict features or terminate the license as permitted by law. After termination you must stop using the app; provisions on intellectual property, limitation of liability, dispute resolution, and provisions that by their nature should survive remain in effect.
13. Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the app is provided “as is” and “as available.” We do not warrant that:
- The service will always be uninterrupted, error-free, or fully secure;
- Import, OCR, matching, deduplication, or sync results will be completely accurate;
- Third-party services, external links, or APIs will remain available;
- The app will meet all your particular needs;
- Any data will be recoverable after device damage, accidental deletion, account issues, or third-party failures.
The app is a reading organization tool and does not provide legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of statutory warranties; this section does not affect rights you cannot waive by law.
14. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential losses arising from use of or inability to use the Service, data loss, sync conflicts, third-party service interruptions, or unauthorized access.
Where applicable law permits an agreed liability cap, our total cumulative liability related to the Service shall not exceed the amount you actually paid for Bookno in the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim; if you paid nothing, it shall not exceed the equivalent of USD 50. This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for intentional acts or gross negligence, liability for personal injury that cannot be excluded by law, and non-waivable consumer rights.
15. Contact, support, and complaints
For technical support, complaints, infringement reports, or questions about these terms, contact:
- Email: luoyixiao13@gmail.com
For copyright or other rights complaints, please provide your identity and contact information, proof of rights, the location of the relevant content, your reasons, and the handling you consider necessary. We will verify and address them within a reasonable scope.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms due to changes in the Service, the law, or platform requirements, revising the date at the top. Significant changes will be reasonably notified through in-app notices, release notes, or the terms page. Where the law requires new consent, we will seek it before the change takes effect.
Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms; if you disagree, stop using the Service. This does not affect cases where separate consent is legally required.
17. Governing law and dispute resolution
These terms are governed by the laws of the People’s Republic of China, without excluding consumer protection provisions of your habitual residence that cannot be waived by law.
Disputes arising from these terms or the Service should first be resolved through friendly negotiation; failing that, either party may bring suit before a competent People’s Court. Where applicable law provides mandatory provisions, those provisions prevail.
18. Miscellaneous
- If any provision is held invalid or unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect; the invalid provision shall be interpreted as closely as possible to its original intent within the law.
- Our failure to exercise a right promptly does not constitute a waiver of that right.
- You may not assign your rights or obligations under these terms without our written consent; we may assign them upon merger, reorganization, or business transfer as permitted by law, without diminishing your statutory rights.
- Headings are for convenience only and do not affect interpretation.
- Where multi-language versions of these terms differ in content, the Simplified Chinese version prevails, unless applicable law provides otherwise.
